First Things First, The Lift-Off
“The college process is fueled by decision, action, and empowerment.”
In his book- 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey notes that for the Apollo 11 Lunar Mission, more energy was consumed in the first two miles of lift-off than over the next 500,000 miles of orbit. His point is very clear to me.
When it comes to big projects, getting started is the hardest part. For my role with families, it is the time in the process that requires the most energy of me and understanding of the family. In the beginning, I have to change the way you look at college in understanding the college perspective.
From this point on, I will change the way you look at and approach college.
- Do you want to be involved in the college process of your child?
- Do you want to get ahead in the game and win it in the end?
- Do you want to become knowledgeable of colleges and their business practices?
As a parent of two college graduates, I certainly did. In the end, it all helped me to save $150,000.
It didn’t come easy though. Over the years, I had to develop a full-proof process that would work for everyone, that’s right, everyone…no simple task. The key element to getting college right falls on the parent to be effective. Ah, Stephen Covey’s book became instrumental. We like to be effective!
Covey’s Habit # 3 of Highly Effective People, Put First Things First is exactly the methodology that we follow. In the college process, the very first step is to have a college list that matches the student’s or athlete’s qualifications and interests along with the parent’s interests and needs.
Having a college list creates the foundation from which everything else in the college search process happens proactively (which happens to be Covey’s Habit # 1- Be Proactive). Not having a college list leaves you to guesswork, while leaving your child’s college to random chance. And that’s not the platform for success.
Why don’t more people have a college list? One, because they don’t know the college landscape. And two, because it’s easier to rely on electronically-created lists or simply pursue big-name schools. But those methods can’t possibly consider all the factors that go into college success and satisfaction.
People hire me because I know the colleges and their perspective while holding the inner secrets to getting college right and saving on college costs.
Accordingly, we start by building a college list matching your child’s qualifications and interests along with your interests and needs. Now that’s being proactive and not leaving college to chance.
This is how we do it. We begin with a one-hour family Skype call or personal meeting. From there, we construct a personalized college list for you, along with a custom college timeline. The college list comes complete with all the vital information you need to know about a college for understanding its possible fit for your child and family.
Our customized college timeline indicates all the key activities and dates of the college process specific to your child’s interests and goals. You’ll know what to do and when to do it…it’s your GPS.
You gain complete access to our Parent Intelligence Resource Center for enhancing your knowledge.
Now this puts you in the driver’s seat with knowledge, confidence, and a strategic plan. This comes to you within 72 hours of our initial call.
We then work on creating a personal marketing package that will be used by the students/ athletes for broadcasting their interests to the college key decision-makers…make sense? As a collective team, we plan college trips and begin to prepare for college visits. This gets your family involved in the game.
Our Lift-Off program is a one-month term of service, maybe longer if circumstances dictate. The “lift-off” to anything is hard work, and so is this. But it’s the lift-off to getting college right for your child that we’re talking about and perhaps saving you thousands of dollars in doing so.

College is a purchasing decision that needs to be taken seriously, like buying a house. It rightfully requires being knowledgeable and effective as a parent. Being a “Stealth Applicant” and “Uninformed Parent” is neither a working plan nor effective strategy. In fact, it’s a weak approach that’s all too typical. It’s a prescription for application denials, lesser scholarships, and compromised outcomes.
Being known to admissions well in advance of submitting applications is your ticket to higher acceptance rates and larger scholarships.
Being known to college coaches is your ticket to being evaluated and playing college sports.
Knowing how the college does its business is your ticket for saving thousands on college costs.
Your success depends on what you know and what actions you take.
