H.S. Athletes, avoid the BIG X

H.S. Athletes, avoid the BIG X

"I see ill-prepared families come in every day to meet with me... they leave me shaking my head!"

These are the exact words of a prominent DI College Coach during a recent discussion with me.

His point is very clear. It doesn't need further explanation. I've heard the same comment from dozens of college coaches.

This coach went on to say-
"People leave my office thinking they had a good visit, when in fact I put a big X right through their name."

    He added-
"Athlete-families arrive with nothing to offer, ask a few basic questions, and leave without having any idea of our interest or recruiting agenda. Yet, they want me to recruit their kid."

CollegeLogic Sports athlete-families arrive well-prepared having done their homework, having "Must-Ask Questions" in hand, and being ready to learn of their real opportunity.

A Surprising Opportunity from Early Failure of Athlete-Families

A Surprising Opportunity from Early Failure of Athlete-Families

Athletes find out failure at a much earlier time in the college process, thus creating a much earlier opportunity!

Here's what you believe is the right college recruiting path-

Spend thousands on travel teams + attend several showcase events + register for college camps => necessary exposure

Exposure => interest of college coaches

Interest of college coaches => college sports opportunity!

That path fails tens of thousands of unsuspecting athlete-families every year. The learning curve just doesn't set in for those families. But for you, the early realization that it doesn't work creates your early opportunity to adjust, here's how.

Let's begin with acknowledging that the last part of that path is right, that interest of college coaches leads directly to real college sports opportunity. In fact, it's the only way it works. But you get there differently than you might initially believe.

Interest of college coaches begins with meeting athletes during college visits and gaining interest in them at that time. That interest gets leveraged into a personal evaluation from the interested coach. An "evaluation" occurs when the coach attends an event of the athlete with the express purpose to watch and evaluate the athlete.

Evaluations are planned events of the athlete-family and college coach. They occur at practices, games, showcases, and college camps. They are available to every athlete who wishes to make the extra effort to personally connect with college coaches. This is the key to significantly improving your odds of playing college sports.

This is the learning lesson and opportunity you get from the early realization that the typical path of most athlete-families doesn't work.

If you have the game for college and want to create your early opportunity by connecting with college coaches,  then

    let's get started.

    The Greatest Halftime Speech

    The Greatest Halftime Speech

Few times in life do you get a second chance to get it right the first time...

    and college is no exception!

2 minutes, from the Netflix original film- Paddleton

If you could just go back in time and do it all over again...imagine what you might do differently.
Well, the time is now, the game is on and you don't have to go back, you can play it forward right now.

If you're game enough to play it forward,
    then submit this quick family-questionnaire.

    Slipping Down the Rabbit-Hole

    Slipping Down the Rabbit-Hole

Colleges are doing some great things, but don't mistake them for your teammate!

As we were recently walking in the park, my Husky-girl Maddie came upon a large group of shrubs that quickly got her attention...ahh, the fresh scent of unsuspecting chipmunks lurking nearby. She pounced into the bush and stuck her nose into a small hole. Right then and there, I saw the correlation between what the chipmunks were looking up at and what parents see in colleges.

I call it the "Rabbit-hole". The rabbit-hole that I refer to is the hole parents find themselves in as they wait and defer the college process. Unsuspectingly, they find themselves slipping down into the rabbit-hole, whereby one day the fox arrives. The fox? COLLEGE. Just like rabbits being trapped by the fox, or chipmunks trapped by Maddie, parents get trapped by the BIG BUSINESS OF COLLEGE.

I loudly applaud what most colleges are doing these days-
    • Expanding their Study programs
    • Increasing Research opportunity
    • Increasing Study-abroad opportunity
    • Improving Internship opportunity
    • Enhancing the Educational experience
    • Modernizing campus environment and resources
They are doing all of it. But don't for a moment believe colleges to be in your court, to be on your team, to have common goals as yours. Why not? Because they aren't and they don't! The college is the fox. The college is Maddie. They trap their prey. And colleges prey on unsuspecting parents who trap themselves. That's not us, we know better!

Rather, we continue to work for being wise and savvy to the business model and policies of colleges in order to achieve our goals.

They have the advantage. We offset it by closely following our 3 Foundational Principles for getting college right, saving thousands on costs, and for athletes, playing college sports. The CollegeLogic Foundational Principles-
    1. Get on the Right Colleges
    2. Meet the Right People
    3. Ask the Right Questions
Here's our list of Must Ask Questions on college visits. Pay close attention to the closing statement for Admissions.

College Visits? Don't be like the others...get it right for yourself

College Visits? Don't be like the others...get it right for yourself

Colleges own your every movement and it begins with college tours.

There is not much more unproductive than visiting colleges, being led around the campus in a group, seeing and hearing what they want you to see and hear, then leaving the college without meeting the key decision-makers and asking the right questions.

The typical approach to visiting colleges is to take a tour, sit in on an information session, then leave without meeting the key people and knowing very little about the school...that's highly unproductive!

The CollegeLogical approach to visiting colleges is to meet your Admission Counselor, meet a Financial Aid Advisor, meet in your anticipated department of study, and for athletes, meet the college coach. This satisfies the purpose of college visits, that is to learn how the college does its business and better understand your full opportunity...that's highly productive!

So why is the typical approach typical? Because it's what the colleges want you to do. It's their way of being in control of what you see and what you hear. In other words, parents just follow along. That's not us, we don't follow along, rather we follow a plan. Our plan is to-
    1. Get on the right colleges
    2. Meet the right people
    3. Ask the right questions
Those are our 3 Foundational Principles for getting college right and saving thousands on costs. To know what questions to ask, here's a valuable gift to you from us for helping you get it right...and knowing the difference.
