Building Relationships, a life-long lesson here...

Building Relationships, a life-long lesson here...

"The key to building relationships is to genuinely care about the other person."

That sounds pretty obvious, and though it's quite logical, it's anything but typical. Let's use college visits as our example. Most people visit a college, drive around a campus, go on a college tour, maybe sit in an information session, then leave the college without having met anyone meaningful in the college acceptance and scholarship process. There's no relationship building there, do we agree?

Some people will at least visit with the Admissions Office and meet a counselor. They will answer a few simple questions and pose a few on their own, all done without any meaningful engagement. This lends itself to becoming a missed opportunity for building a meaningful relationship.

So think of this, why are you there in the first place? As you sit with the admission counselor, you have come to enhance your admission and scholarship status. Do we agree on this?

The goal is to be validated as a prospective applicant.

The strategy is to validate them as an important person.

Validation works when you leave an impression. Enhancing your admission and scholarship status occurs when the counselor remembers you! They will not fully validate or remember you without you first validating them.

    Here are
4 questions and 4 tips for doing this effectively-

    Questions
    1) How are you doing?
    2) Why do you do this job?
    3) What college did you attend and why?
    4) What are your biggest challenges?

    Tips-
1- Greet them with a smile and a firm handshake
2- Always look them in the eye
3- Speak slow and use tone of voice in discussion
4- Pay attention to their responses

Our students and athletes enhance their college situation by building relationships. You can too.

The Importance of SAT and ACT Scores

The Importance of SAT and ACT Scores

"SAT scores have never been higher. So when you land a big score, what will you do with it?"

Some people think that SAT/ ACT scores are not as important as they once were. Well, frankly, that's a bad thought and one that may cost a child their college opportunity. SAT/ ACT scores are very important. How important? When it comes to college rankings, SAT/ ACT scores of incoming freshman is the 4th highest factor of fifteen, carrying a weight of 8.125%. This signifies its importance. Note that GPA is not one of the factors.

With the August SAT and September ACT results in, what are you going to do with them? No doubt that higher scores improve admission odds and possible scholarships, but more than anything else, they open the door for college opportunity, a door that few students will walk through.

Here's the problem, most students who score high on their tests believe that's all it takes to win admissions and earn scholarships; and that their work is done. I disagree. At each school, there are many more academic-qualifying applicants than there are acceptances provided. This means that admission offices must choose among the qualifiers, who's invited in versus who is left out.

To be invited in, it's important to walk through that door for meeting the people who will decide on your application and scholarship. It's that simple, yet that elusive.

College Recruiting, it's not just about talent!

College Recruiting, it's not just about talent!

"Parents typically think that only the most talented athletes go on to play college sports."

Let's accept that among the top 50 DI colleges across the country, the coaches will recruit the best talent available, often times disregarding other relevant factors (grades and such of the student-athlete).  And let's accept that this practice is most prevalent in the men's sports of football and basketball, where big revenues are generated for the college. This practice typically applies to recruiting 10,000 of the incoming 110,000 freshmen athletes each year. Where do the other 100,000 come from?

Those roster spots are filled with quality kids, who are good students and good athletes; who work hard and have good character; who are involved and engaged in the college process; and, who are willing to do things that other more talented athletes won't do to be recruited.

When it comes to being recruited and playing college sports, there are 8 common fallacies derailing well-intentioned athletes and parents. Here is-

Fallacy # 8- Athletic Recruiting is a talent contest. Invalid!

Why is it invalid? Because it's false. It's only a talent contest for the very best players, about 10% of the college athletes. For the rest, it's a relationship-building contest between the athlete and the coach. Gone are the days where coaches are out looking for athletes. Now are the days where athletes come to the coaches.

Don't get faked out by all the showcase events having dozens of assistant coaches on the sidelines seemingly watching. They are not typically there to evaluate your child unless you have made prior arrangements for that to happen. That's on you, not on them! The control is in your hands, not theirs.

This should be good news for you. It's why our athletes play college sports, improving their odds by 20 times over the others who may have more talent.

    Travel Teams and College Sports

    Travel Teams and College Sports

"A common error in parents reasoning is thinking they must spend thousand$ on travel teams."

Let's accept that often times the most serious athletes play on elite travel teams and many of them go on to play college sports. Fine, however, my son Jeff did not. Yet, he received a full tuition baseball scholarship (a rarity) and was a 3-time DI all-conference player.

How was he able to do that? He spent two years visiting colleges and meeting their coaches. That's called- building relationships.

When it comes to being recruited and playing college sports, there are 8 common fallacies derailing well-intentioned athletes and parents.
    Here is-

Fallacy # 7- Playing on travel teams is your ticket to becoming a collegiate student-athlete. Invalid!

Why is it invalid? Because it's false. Your ticket to playing college sports runs through building relationships and planning for personal evaluations. It's that simple, yet that elusive.

Travel teams have become a huge business across America. And they no-doubt serve a purpose. But there's no correlation between playing travel sports and playing college sports...zero! There is an absolute correlation between building relationships with college coaches and playing college sports...bingo!

That's why our athletes make it their plan to meet and connect with coaches in a meaningful way beyond casual emails and camp invitations. It works!

    Winning Isn't Everything!

    Winning Isn't Everything!

"A common error in parents reasoning is their belief that a coach's top priority is winning."

Let's accept the only thing that counts to many Division I coaches of top programs is winning. They get paid well to win, and if they don't win enough, they're sent packing, usually to be hired by another school. But those coaches account for less than 5% of all college coaches.

For the remainder of college coaches, about 35,000 of them, if they get fired, they will be bounced out of college coaching entirely. For those coaches, many other factors go into their job than winning, such as graduation rates, team GPA, proper conduct of their players, and more.

When it comes to being recruited and playing college sports, there are 8 common fallacies derailing well-intentioned athletes and parents. What's a fallacy? It's an
error in reasoning that renders an argument logically invalid. Here is-

Fallacy # 6- Winning is the college coach's top priority and recruiting is their daily objective. Invalid!

Why is it invalid? Because it's false. Keeping their job is the coach's top priority. Taking care of the current team roster is the coach's daily objective.

College coaches love their jobs and they all like to win. But if their players get into trouble, don't make their grades, or misrepresent the college, then that can be grounds for getting fired much more so than wins and losses. That type of dismissal typically results in a quick jettison from the world of college coaching. They will not risk that. Therefore, they pay close attention to managing their program and coaching their players. They wake up everyday to check on their players, not to check on emails of prospects.

That's why our athletes make it a specific effort to gain the trust of college coaches for enhancing and facilitating the college recruiting process. You child should too.
